Rhodes Batik Project
“We unveiled
this afternoon and of course everyone was impressed. Ooohs and Aaahs. Literally. I was also happy to hear several folks once again describe what a great time they had doing the work last month. They used words like “relaxing”, “fulfilling”, “joyful”. ” -R. Trenthem, Rhodes College Associate Director for Systems and Networks
This batik collage was created by the Department of Information Services at Rhodes College. The department, which includes librarians and the IT staff, worked together to depict their own re-invented cuneiforms on silk fabric. They chose cuneiforms as the inspiration for their project because of the importance of the written word in their own work- and after all, cuneiforms are the most ancient form of information technology! The finished piece is a large (40″h x 60w”) silk batik piece in a vibrant spectrum of colors. Each of the 26 batik strips was designed by a different person and has been stitched together into one large wall-piece. The finished piece was stretched and now hangs in their department.
